The goal of Torah Outreach Program is to bring Yiddishkeit to people who are usually forgotten, namely our senior citizens; the elderly who live in assisted living facilities or nursing homes. Everyone knows about the students and young professionals and wants to bring them closer to Yiddishkeit, but what about the Jewish elderly? Some of these seniors are holocaust survivors, some were religious when they were younger, and our program is bringing them back to our heritage. Some of these individuals were approached by missionaries and we kept them from converting, some were planning on being cremated and we were able to procure for them a kosher burial. We bring Shabbos candles to women who haven't seen shabbos candles since they were young and are now lighting every week and men who were unaware that you can't use a razor now shave only with electric shavers. Most importantly, people who felt disconnected from Judaism now feel a real pride in their religion. In Slichos, we ask Hashem
אַל־תַּשְׁלִיכֵנוּ לְעֵת זִקְנָה כִּכְלוֹת כֹּחֵנוּ אַל־תַּעַזְבֵנוּ
Do not throw us away when we are old and don't leave us when our strength is used up.
Let's show Hashem that we are demonstrating exactly what we are asking; That we haven't forgotten our senior citizens and those who are aging by contributing to the Torah Outreach Program.
